    “Old Dollar”

Fine Animal has surpassed themselves.  The Columbus-base trio just released “Old Dollar’, and the strangeness, other-worldiness of this band just gets stranger and better.  Their first single, “Lay Awake”, was much more traditional.  On “Old Dollar”, they let out all the spots and become as weird and beautiful as they can be.

    According to the band:

Fine Animal’s “Old Dollar” was largely inspired by the the sampled recording of “Old Dollar Mamie” recorded in 1947 at the Lambert Camp at the Mississippi State Penitentiary, better known as Parchman Farm.
The best single document of folklore work song and field holler tradition. We loved that the song belonged not to one author or individual, but rather to spirit and tradition.

In our interpretation of “Old Dollar” we attempt to apply and intertwine the spirit of this old recording with some contemporary and futuristic sounds. Blending the best of old and new styles, we aspire to merge the hardships of the past with the so called “modern struggle”

The end result is purely for your delight.

And I for one say thank you, Fine Animal.  This is one of the most remarkable songs I’ve ever heard.  St. Vincent and Bjork working on the chain gang.  Beautiful.  Chilling.
