    The Blow

    “Think About Me”

The Blow is made up of the duo, Melissa Dyne and Khaela Maricich, who have spent time developing their tremendous acoustic meets electronic pop.  “Think About Me” was created on five tracks, using modular and analog synthesizers plus vocals to create layers of frequency. Through the recording process, the duo have developed their own instruments and processing systems for creating sounds, ending up with a mothership of gear patched together in a a web of cables. No longer employing a laptop in live shows, their songs are now performed as live production.  I think the melody of “Think About Me” is so interesting and complex while sounding simple, fitting with the lyrics perfectly.  The Blow reminds me of Kate Bush in the way their melodies change and do not follow the progression the listener expects.  Just so beautiful.  I also wanted to share about their web-based project that Dyne and Maricich have started, which is best stated on their own terms.

WOMANPRODUCER is an exploration of women as creators of sonic worlds. Begun an internet-based archive of female, trans and  non-binary music producers, the project expands this fall at National Sawdust into a series of live events. In panel discussions and performances, the series is bringing together artists who are also producers from across a variety of genres and eras, such as Neko Case, Zola Jesus, Suzi Analogue, Yuka C. Honda & Miho Hatori (of Cibo Matto), Deradoorian and Pauline Oliveros. Many of the participants, although well-known as musicians and performers, have received much less exposure for being the authors of their own sound, a dynamic which persists with even the most renowned female producer-performers, such as Kate Bush or Missy Elliot. WOMANPRODUCER seeks to address this inconsistency. Each event will be documented with the aim of generating more materials to add to the ever growing body of information about sound creation and the diversity of artists contributing to the field. The WOMANPRODUCER series and archive are the project of Khaela Maricich and Melissa Dyne, of the NYC-based electronic duo The Blow.
