“I’m Always Watching You/I’m Always Watching Too”

New York-based, Norwegian artist Sondre Lerche has released a new single and it’s follow-up, and both are strangely beautiful and creepy at the same time.  Lerche states about the two:

“The night before I was going to record I’m Always Watching You, I awoke from dream about the song. In the dream the song was slower, anchored by a sluggish dub-groove, and a narrative that was turning on me: I was being watched. I had been found out. It proved impossible to bridge the dream with the more natural, realistic version that became the original take on the song. But I couldn’t let go of the dream, and the hazy recording I made on my phone in the middle of that night became my guide for a different take on the same dream. A response, of sorts: I’m Always Watching You Too.”

What happens is this strange ‘shout and response’, Lerche takes the subject of obsession and then sets it on its head, similar to the way that Frida from Abba did on her hit, “There’s Something Going On.”  In Lerche’s video, he is the watcher, while, in the response song, he is the one being watched.  This is tremendous and deep music.  Lerche’s voice is smoky-jazz yet he uses in the best ways possible.  He can sing anything from jazz and pop to ambience and electronic.  Check him out: he really is a treasure.  Seldom has obsession sounded so good.
