    “Contact”

    Intoxicated Women

Volume 4 of Mick Harvey’s labor of love (the translations of the great French pop writer, Serge Gainsbourg) reaches its pinnacle of great duets Gainsbourg performed with various singers in the 60’s.  The first single, “Contact”, was originally sung by Brigitte Bardot and released in 1968, and now features Channthy Kak of Cambodian Space Project and frequent collaborator Xanthe Waite (Terry) on vocals.  It is a beautiful translation of the song, and Waite’s voice is very Bardotish, with the mix of innocence and worldliness that made the original so provocative.  Harvey has always had a keen sense of interpretation, and his days with Nick Cave and PJ Harvey have just hardened his musicality and made even more beautiful his world version.  Thank you for bringing Gainsbourg into this century.
