    Alexa Dark

    “Empty Drinks”

    Empty Drinks/Empty Hearts

If anyone deserves the name last name dark, it is Alexa Dark.  This singer/songwriter/guitarist has dark lyrics combined with a dark sound and dark, smoky vocals who can still kick those high notes out of the ballpark.  But what really grabs me is her rhythm guitar chops.  It’s rare when the rhythm guitar drives the song, but in Dark’s case, that is the way it goes (as a rhythm guitarist, I hate when we’re overlooked).  I put her up there with Pete Townsend, Malcolm Young, and especially Joan Jett.

Raised between Spain, London and Germany, now based in New York City and London, the songs are inspired by Alexa Dark’s transient lifestyle. The songs were written in bedrooms, planes, between drinks outside East London clubs during early  morning hours and on the concrete of various metropolitan cities. Conceived in heartbreak, in transit and from boundless nostalgia, these tracks intertwine cultural and personal narratives, influenced by the Spanish singer songwriters played in her childhood kitchen, in addition to female rock legends such as Patti Smith, Debbie Harry and Kim Gordon.

Hearing her perform, you can see Smith and especially Gordon in her performances.  I love Alexa Dark.  She is the next big thing.
