I caught up with Hatian hip hop artist Garcy who has been building a name for himself after the release of his singles “Can I Be Your Jay” and “Strike”. Garcy moved to the US around the age of thirteen in 2008 and started off rapping in Creole. The consummate performer who had experience pop and locking and doing gymnastics has up and coming shows in Canada and New York. We got a chance to chop it up for his first interview on Audio Fuzz.
What is the biggest difference living in the US from Haiti?
In Haiti everybody is in survival mode. It’s never a peace of mind where it’s like I’m just going to chill today. In Haiti we always expect the worse but reach for the best. We don’t take anything for granted because anything can happen. Moving out here it was difficult to adapt in learning the language but easier in terms of peace of mind and things I didn’t have to worry about.
When did you discover your passion for music?
I started making music when I was 10, but I’ve been around music since I was 4 or 5 because my father’s friend was a DJ, so every Saturday when I finished my homework I would go to his house and learn how to scratch and mix. That’s when I grew to love American music. Around that time 50 Cent was huge. He is my favorite rapper, even now. I had 50 Cent chains and shoes. I called myself Lil Cent when I was in Haiti. By the time I was 8 or 9 my cousin started a rap group I started rapping in Creole and when I moved here started learning the language first and started rapping in English when I comprehended it.
Tell me about your singles “Strike” and “Can I Be Your Jay”?
“Strike” is fairly recent once I heard the beat, I mixed and recorded that whole track myself, and one of my friends fixed some things on the record. “Can I Be Your Jay” I made it almost a year ago but I never wanted to release it because I was waiting for the perfect time. Its no perfect time. When my manager heard it and said it was a go. Its like meeting a girl as pretty as Beyonce, I could of used anybody like can I be your Barack type of shit. Everybody from my country would get the message and said “Can I Be Your Jay”.
