Hellish Beauty: Russian Baths – “Parasite”

    “Parasite”

This extremely dark band from Brooklyn is finally releasing a full album of quirky alien music they have been teasing us with the past couple of years, and it has been worth the wait.  Comprised of Jess Rees (guitar, vocals) and Luke Koz (guitar, vocals), joined live by Kyle Garvey (bass) and Steven Levine (drums), the band weaves the two vocals among the beautiful guitars soaring (or is that falling) through the heavens, earth-bound by the movements of the percussion and bass.  Rees sounds like a more hellish Hope Sandoval while Luke is a more heavenly Nick Cave.  Together they weave melodies you have never heard (though at the back of your mind, some primal instinct tells you, this is the music of gods and demons; I recognize these sounds as the sounds of my dreams).  Russian Baths combine the excess of noise with the etherealism of dreampop, creating a new musical experience that one needs to hear to believe.
