Bay Area’s post-punk group Topographies releases their second album, Interior Spring, through Dark Entries. Established in 2018 in San Francisco, members Justin Oronos, Jeremie Ruest, and Gray Tolhurst merge the stark guitar work and somber mood of early coldwave with the lush textures and resonance found in traditional shoegaze. This fusion creates a sound that is both modern and enduring. In Interior Spring, the band delves into feelings of guilt, ancestral trauma, and the journey to recovery. The album’s title holds a threefold meaning: it symbolizes a hidden river bearing hope, a tightly wound clock filled with anxiety, and a time of year when wildflowers sprout on forgotten graves. Influenced by Laurence Tolhurst of The Cure, Gray Tolhurst’s father, the band also draws inspiration from groups like Asylum Party and The Chameleons, particularly in standout tracks “Night Sea” and “Chain of Days”. Gray Tolhurst’s lyrics, shaped by his personal recovery from substance abuse, explore the repetitive nature of addiction and despair. Across these ten tracks, Topographies aim to convey that true freedom lies in embracing the everyday wonders of human existence, rather than seeking an escape from them. Check out “Night Sea” below:
