    Rating 10/10 – CLASSIC Album

The Smile’s new album Wall of Eyes has garnered attention for its intriguing and diverse musical approach. Formed by Radiohead’s Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood, along with jazz drummer Tom Skinner, the band presents a project that diverges from their mainstay, yet retains familiar elements.

Wall Of Eyes kicks off with the title track, featuring a bossa nova rhythm that sets a deceptively mellow tone, only to delve into more complex and darker themes as it progresses. Thom Yorke’s lyrics maintain their characteristic depth and introspection, while Greenwood continues his exploration of sound, creating a rich, layered experience. Tom Skinner’s contribution with his jazz-influenced drumming adds a unique flavor to the mix.

Tracks like “Teleharmonic” and “Read the Room” blend rock influences with Beatles-esque melodies, shifting from soothing to more menacing tones. “Friend of a Friend” takes a more political angle, while “Under Our Pillows” and “I Quit” explore more abstract and atmospheric sounds.

“Bending Hectic”, a standout track, has been noted for its vivid imagery and Ennio Morricone-inspired elements. It paints a vivid picture, though some critics find its dramatic conclusion a bit overdone.

Wall of Eyes presents a journey through varied musical landscapes, anchored by Skinner’s distinctive drumming and the band’s ability to craft minimalist yet deeply expressive songs. The album has been described as an ephemeral trip, marked by its experimental and atmospheric qualities that both echo and diverge from Radiohead’s legacy.
