Vampire Weekend has officially unveiled their fifth studio album, titled Only God Was Above Us, set to release on April 5 through Columbia Records. Ahead of the album’s release, two tracks, “Capricorn” and “Gen-X Cops,” will be available on February 16. Details including the album cover, tracklist, and a promotional trailer are now available.

In celebration of the album, the band is set to perform at the Moody Amphitheater in Austin, coinciding with the total solar eclipse on April 8. Check out the album trailer below:

The album is a collaborative effort by Ezra Koenig, Chris Baio, and Chris Tomson, recorded across New York, Los Angeles, London, and Tokyo. Production was led by Koenig and Ariel Rechtshaid, with Dave Fridmann handling the mixing and Emily Lazar mastering the album.

The majority of the lyrics for Only God Was Above Us were penned by Koenig during 2019 and 2020, drawing inspiration from a 1988 newspaper headline featured in Steven Siegel’s photograph Subway Dream 11, which also serves as the album’s cover image. Since their initial rapid succession of releases, Vampire Weekend has adopted a more leisurely pace, with Father of the Bride releasing in May 2019, a full six years after Modern Vampires of the City. This period also saw the departure of founding member Rostam Batmanglij, though he continued to contribute to the band’s fourth album.

The band received the 2020 Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album with Father of the Bride. The album, primarily recorded in California, was a product of Koenig’s collaboration with Ariel Rechtshaid, Steve Lacy, Danielle Haim, among others, marking a new chapter in the band’s evolution from their New York beginnings.
