Mount Kimbie’s latest album, The Sunset Violent, is a compelling blend of indie, shoegaze, and electronica that continues the innovative path they’ve carved in contemporary music. Released on April 5, 2024, this album marks their fourth studio project and features nine tracks, including collaborations with King Krule on songs like “Boxing” and “Empty and Silent.” The album was largely penned in California’s Yucca Valley, adding a unique, desolate aesthetic that echoes through their music, reflecting both physical and emotional landscapes .

The lead single, “Fishbrain,” is accompanied by a video directed by Tegen Williams, which portrays a dystopian factory setting, mirroring the song’s themes of monotonous labor and industrial bleakness. This track, like much of the album, explores deeper themes of isolation and disconnection, using a mix of haunting lyrics and atmospheric sounds to engage listeners .

The Sunset Violent is seen as a step forward for Mount Kimbie, showing both maturity and innovation in their sound and artistic expression. The album is also a significant shift from their 2017 album “Love What Survives” and follows their unique 2022 double-album project where each band member explored individual musical directions. The new album seems to integrate these experiences, presenting a unified yet diverse sound palette .

Fans and new listeners alike will find The Sunset Violent to be a thought-provoking and richly textured addition to Mount Kimbie’s discography. For those interested in the nuances of their latest work, exploring the full album will reveal a detailed and emotionally resonant musical journey. Check out “Empty And Silent” below:
