Ghost Party, the Texas-based psych-revival cosmic country outfit, makes a striking debut with their album ‘Ghost Moves.’ The band masterfully blends nostalgic musical motifs into an intriguing new soundscape that feels both familiar and fresh.

The album opens with “Teenage Shaman,” a droney homage to the Spacemen 3 sound. This track delves into themes of isolation and dejection, enveloped in a dense wall of sound. It seamlessly transitions into the cosmic balladry of “Cardboard Moon” and the evocative title track “Ghost Moves,” setting the tone for the album’s emotional journey.

Switching gears, the album then bursts into three rollicking, sun-drenched psychedelic country tunes. These tracks capture the carefree spirit of Gram Parsons and his modern disciples, like Beachwood Sparks and The Nude Party. A lively desert stomp concludes Side A with a burst of energy and enthusiasm.

Side B, for those enjoying the vinyl experience, holds some stark surprises. It begins with the somber, four-track cassette recording “Baby Baby,” a whisper-quiet late-night confessional. “Guest List” follows with its introspective storytelling, leading into the retro powerhouse “Severed Hands.” The side wraps up with “After Hours,” a bold venture into krautrock territory.

Throughout “Ghost Moves,” Ghost Party remains true to their vintage aesthetic. The album is a treasure trove of analog audio delights, thanks to the expert production of Steve Christensen, renowned for his work with Khruangbin. The sound is rich with Farfisa organs, Mellotrons, Moogs, 12-string guitars, harmonies, and lush reverb.

Lyrically, McCullough Ferguson, the principal singer-songwriter, captures surreal themes of loss and isolation, interspersed with cosmic love letters. Ferguson reveals, “Everything on ‘Ghost Moves’ is true and is a first-person narrative, but I wanted it to be vague enough where the listener could easily put themselves into it. I also didn’t want it to be an absolute downer. The goal is always to be crafting the ultimate late-night driving jams.”

Ferguson is joined by Victor Sanchez on drums and Kendrick Ballard on keys and bass, with Will Van Horn contributing celestial pedal steel on three tracks. “Ghost Moves” is set to be released everywhere on June 14th, promising to be a standout addition to any music lover’s collection.
