Alex Izenberg, an obscured odyssey, The Wraith Behind Our Eyes

Alex Izenberg’s latest singles, “An Obscured Odyssey” and “The Wraith Behind Our Eyes,” are a tantalizing glimpse into his forthcoming fourth album and full-band debut, *Alex Izenberg & The Exiles*, set to drop on July 26 via Weird World / Domino.

“An Obscured Odyssey,” accompanied by a hand-painted video by John Andrews of John Andrews & Yawns, stands out as one of the album’s most refined melodies. It effortlessly blends Izenberg’s triumphant yet introspective lyrics, creating a memorable auditory experience. In stark contrast, “The Wraith Behind Our Eyes” captivates with its seductive groove, inviting listeners to delve into its depths and leaving a lasting impression from the very first listen.

Izenberg’s ambition with *Alex Izenberg & The Exiles* is clear: to craft something truly enduring. The album’s romantic and warm melodies are complemented by expansive arrangements, showcasing a newly formed ensemble built around his strongest compositions. Veteran producer Phil Ek (Fleet Foxes, Father John Misty, Built to Spill) has mixed the album, infusing Izenberg’s intimate sound with a mystical, communal glow.

The core band features Izenberg’s childhood friend and primary collaborator, multi-instrumentalist Greg Hartunian. The duo co-produced the album at Tropico Beauty in Glendale, California, allowing the songs to organically evolve from Izenberg’s intensive writing process. They brought in an array of talented collaborators, including drummer Jay Rudolph (Weyes Blood), keyboardist Tyler Cash (Devendra Banhart), bassist Max Whipple (Sparks), pedal steel guitarist Connor Gallaher (Lana Del Rey), saxophonist Colin Kupka, guitarist Dashiell Le Francis, and vocalists Marina Allen, Juliana Giraffe, Gracie Jackson, and Colby Nathan. The album also features string arrangements by Izenberg and Cynthia Tolson (MUNA), marking a bold new chapter for this timeless songwriter.

Watch the video for “An Obscured Odyssey” and stream both singles to immerse yourself in the magic of Alex Izenberg’s evolving musical journey.
