Last month, Steve Marion, the guitarist known as Delicate Steve, unveiled his forthcoming album, Delicate Steve Sings. Set for release on August 16th via ANTI-, the album’s title suggests a surprising turn for an artist celebrated for his five critically acclaimed instrumental records and collaborations with artists like Miley Cyrus, Paul Simon, Amen Dunes, Tame Impala, and The Black Keys. Yet, true to Delicate Steve’s enigmatic style, there’s more to this concept than meets the eye.

Drawing inspiration from Willie Nelson’s classic cover album Stardust, Marion set out to create a record that reinterprets iconic music from the past with his distinctive touch. Rather than crafting a typical covers album, Marion blends faithful renditions with original compositions that channel the voices of other artists, resulting in a unique sonic tapestry.

The album’s first single, “I’ll Be There,” showcases Marion’s inventive approach, with a composition influenced by Bill Withers’ soulful vocal style from hits like “Lean On Me” and “Ain’t No Sunshine.” Today, Marion offers a second taste with his cover of Donnie & Joe Emerson’s “Baby.”

Originally an underground hit from the Emerson brothers’ self-released 1979 album, rediscovered in 2012 by Light In The Attic, “Baby” possesses a haunting quality that Marion accentuates while infusing the lead melody with a laid-back swagger. The track is rich with intricate details, and while Steve’s guitar takes the spotlight, Marion’s voice subtly mingles in the ethereal choir of backing vocals, adding an extra layer of depth.
