    Destroy boys, should’ve been me

Sacramento punk outfit Destroy Boys are gearing up to release their new album, *Funeral Soundtrack #4*, next month, and today they have unveiled a blistering new track and video, “Should’ve Been Me.” Clocking in at just over one minute, this track is a frenetic burst of energy, desperately clinging to solid ground. Violet Mayugba, guitarist for the band, describes it as “a one-minute embodiment of rage,” born from the aftermath of a tumultuous breakup. “When I found out my ex had been seeing someone else, I screamed like I had never screamed before, and that’s the voice you’re hearing. The video demonstrates my rage and fear for the future battling it out.”

The accompanying video amplifies this all-encompassing fury, capturing the raw emotion and visceral intensity of the song. You can watch the video [here]. “Should’ve Been Me” follows the previously released single “Boyfeel,” where vocalist Alexia Roditis explores their evolving relationship with gender nonconformity. The upcoming album also includes earlier singles “Plucked,” “Shadow (I’m Breaking Down),” and “Beg For The Torture.”

In support of the new album, Destroy Boys have announced a tour kicking off on October 25th in Seattle. The 22-date tour will hit major cities including Portland, Chicago, Detroit, New York, and DC. Support acts on select dates include Teen Mortgage, Sasami, and Chokecherry. Tickets are available [here].

Due out August 9th via Hopeless Records, *Funeral Soundtrack #4* marks Destroy Boys’ fourth album. Featuring collaborations with Mannequin Pussy and Scowl, and produced by Carlos de la Garza (Paramore, The Linda Lindas, Best Coast), this record captures the band at their most evolved. It retains their punk rock roots while venturing into new sonic territories, incorporating eclectic influences like salsa and bossa nova, and highlighting their gothier inspirations such as The Smiths, Cocteau Twins, and Siouxsie and the Banshees.

Guitarist Violet Mayugba reflects on the album’s thematic depth, “Looking back, our first three albums marked the deaths of things. They were soundtracks to our funerals, whether they were for our ages or our mental states. We’ve gone through a lot of changes as a band and as people.” Destroy Boys, formed in 2015 by Mayugba and Roditis at just 15 years old, have consistently marked periods of growth and transformation with each release. “The first one was our high school album,” Mayugba explains. “On the second record, we went to college and were saying goodbye to our childhood. On the third one, we’d just gone through COVID and, speaking for myself, I lost my entire sense of self and gained a new one.”
