    Rating: 8 – GREAT ALBUM

GUM and Ambrose Kenny-Smith’s album ‘Ill Times’ is an outstanding feet for its innovative fusion of psych-rock and groove-based music. This collaboration between Jay Watson (GUM, Pond, Tame Impala) and Ambrose Kenny-Smith (King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, The Murlocs) marks a departure from their usual styles, exploring new musical territories such as funk and soul—and they do it like pros!

The album opens with the title track featuring an extraterrestrial synth riff, followed by fuzzy guitars and driving drums, creating an existential space-rock vibe. The song “Dud,” written partly by Kenny-Smith’s late father, reflects on themes of loss and resilience, adding a poignant layer to the album. Other tracks like “Fool For You” and “The Gloater” showcase their ability to blend different genres seamlessly.

Reviewers have praised the dynamic shifts within the tracks, the haunting vocals, and the synergy between Watson and Kenny-Smith, resulting in a sound that’s both fun and meaningful. The combination of their vast musical influences has produced an album that’s seen as a fresh and exciting project in the current music scene.

The duo’s ability to experiment with new styles while maintaining a cohesive sound has been a highlight for listeners, making “Ill Times” a noteworthy release. The album’s exploration of themes like loss and resilience, paired with its diverse musical influences, showcases the depth and versatility of both artists.
