Julie Hill’s glowserene: A Meditative Journey of Healing and Reflection

Julie Hill, a New York-based artist known for her ambient and occasional pop music, is set to release her latest project, glowserene, on August 30. This album leans heavily into the ambient genre, offering a meditative journey through Hill’s personal reflections and experiences.

glowserene was born from a challenging period in Hill’s life. In December 2021, while living with strangers in Brooklyn amid the isolation of the pandemic, Hill faced the devastating news that her aunt and both grandmothers were diagnosed with different forms of cancer. At the same time, she learned she was at risk for cancer herself. This emotional turmoil drove her to seek solace in music, transforming her practice into a meditative escape from the chaos around her. Through her music, Hill created a serene alternate reality, channeling feelings of peace, self-love, and gratitude.

The album begins with an improvisation featuring Jack McLoughlin (guitar), Zachary Paul (violin), and Zubin Hensler (horn), setting the tone for a contemplative experience. The title track, inspired by Suzanne Ciani’s early electronic works, invites listeners into a meditative state with poetic lyrics like “rove on the shadows,” reflecting on a peaceful moment shared with a friend. “An ether and time” explores memories of loved ones lost or distant, while “in and out of your mind” celebrates self-love and the joy of movement, dedicated to a supportive friend. The album concludes with the instrumental “ambient bliss,” a piece born from deep self-reflection and a new perspective on personal relationships.

glowserene is a poignant exploration of healing through music, offering listeners a tranquil soundscape that echoes Hill’s journey towards inner peace amidst adversity. Check out “glowserene” below:
