Matt Champion’s latest release, “SPJ,” featuring the haunting vocals of Deb Never, is a mesmerizing finale to his series Slint’s Favorite—a sequence of tracks that brilliantly expands on the universe he built with his solo debut, Mika’s Laundry, which dropped to critical acclaim earlier this year. Over the past month, Champion has been dropping new tracks weekly, each contributing to an eclectic, atmospheric soundscape that feels like an immersive sonic art installation.

The songs “Faye,” “Hacker,” and “SPJ” are layered with textures that reveal Champion’s experimental edge, and earlier this week, he treated fans to a new visual for “SPJ,” directed by Ganna Bogdan, which dives into the surreal visuals that have become a hallmark of the Slint’s Favorite series. Now, with “Ash,” Champion cements his distinct vibe—one that’s richly cinematic, haunting, and genre-bending.

Champion’s collaborations with Dijon, Henry Kwapis, and guest spots from artists like JENNIE and Dora Jar weave a complex, nuanced tapestry that shows off his versatility as an artist. UPROXX described Champion’s sound as a testament to his “range and dynamism as a creator,” and Slint’s Favorite pushes these boundaries even further. With each track, Champion dives deeper into the dark, introspective, and often disorienting world he and director Anna Pollack have meticulously crafted for his listeners, making Slint’s Favorite an experience as much as it is a collection of songs.

For fans who want to experience Champion’s unique sonic landscape live, he’ll be taking the stage at Camp Flog Gnaw festival at Dodger Stadium in LA this weekend. Don’t miss out on what promises to be an unforgettable set from one of the most innovative voices in music today. Check out “SPJ” below:
