La Luz’s fifth studio album, News of the Universe, released on May 24, 2024, marks a significant evolution in the band’s sound and artistic direction. This record is their first under the Sub Pop label, following previous releases on its subsidiary, Hardly Art.

The album emerges from a period of personal upheaval for lead vocalist and guitarist Shana Cleveland, who faced a breast cancer diagnosis two years after the birth of her son. This experience deeply influences the album’s themes, infusing it with reflections on mortality, resilience, and transformation.

News of the Universe expands La Luz’s signature blend of surf rock and psychedelic influences by incorporating elements of baroque pop and doo-wop. The production, led by Maryam Qudus (also known as Spacemoth), introduces synthesized sounds that contribute to a more expansive and cosmic atmosphere. This collaboration was so fruitful that Qudus has since joined the band as their new keyboardist.

The album’s lead single, “Strange World,” exemplifies this sonic evolution. The track features a persistent bass riff and layered harmonies, creating a hypnotic soundscape that complements its introspective lyrics. Cleveland describes the chorus as a personal mantra during challenging times, encapsulated in the reassuring line, “we’ll be fine, just take your time.”

News of the Universe also signifies a transitional phase in La Luz’s lineup. It marks the debut of drummer Audrey Johnson and the final contributions from longtime members Lena Simon (bass) and Alice Sandahl (keyboards). Despite these changes, the album maintains the cohesive and immersive quality that has become a hallmark of La Luz’s music.

Critics have noted the album’s ability to balance themes of uncertainty and hope, with tracks that float in a dream-like manner, characteristic of the band’s style. The integration of new influences and personal experiences results in a record that is both timely and timeless, offering listeners a poignant reflection on navigating change and finding solace in the midst of chaos.

News of the Universe stands as a testament to La Luz’s growth as artists, seamlessly blending personal narrative with musical innovation to create an album that resonates on multiple levels.
