Deerhoof Premieres “Immigrant Songs” in the Most Deerhoof Way Possible

Deerhoof has never played by the rules, and their latest album announcement proves it. Noble and Godlike in Ruin drops April 25th via Joyful Noise Recordings, but instead of a traditional rollout, the band took a guerrilla approach—premiering lead single “Immigrant Songs” exclusively on Craigslist. Posting in cities like Brooklyn, Tucson, Portland, and Minneapolis, they listed themselves for hire in the “Services” section, slyly directing curious readers to the track alongside images of the album artwork. The move isn’t just clever marketing—it’s a pointed statement, choosing a platform that doesn’t openly support fascism.

“Immigrant Songs” is quintessential Deerhoof: a shape-shifting journey that begins as a delicate, bell-laced invitation to a party and ends in a chaos-driven sonic meltdown. Satomi Matsuzaki’s lyrics morph from a seemingly simple scene into a searing allegory, confronting the way immigrants are treated in America. “Kindness is all I needed from you,” she sings, before the track erupts into an onslaught of noise-rock fury. It’s a masterclass in contrast, weaving danceable beats through bossa nova chords before tearing it all apart in the final stretch.

Greg Saunier puts it bluntly: “This song is what it feels like to see the discourse around immigration get so twisted.” He calls out the hypocrisy of politicians who exploit the issue while ignoring the underpaid, overworked immigrants holding society together.

Noble and Godlike in Ruin, the band’s 20th album and follow-up to 2023’s Miracle-Level, is self-produced and features a guest appearance from Saul Williams on “Under Rats.” True to form, Deerhoof turns whimsy into revolution, beauty into catharsis, and sound into something that demands to be felt.
