Aesop Rock’s “Send Help” Rides Boom-Bap Bliss into the Abyss

Aesop Rock returns with a swaggering bang on “Send Help,” the latest preview of his forthcoming album Black Hole Superette (out May 30 via Rhymesayers). Over a punchy, classic boom-bap groove, Aesop threads razor-sharp couplets—twisting syntax and imagery into a lyrical knot that’s as dense as it is dizzying. The self-directed video, co-created with longtime visual partner El Coro (Justin “Coro” Kaufman), adds a playful twist: enter Aesop’s towering Irish Wolfhound, who roams through the surreal vignettes as if guarding the edges of this intricate wordplay.

“Send Help” is more than a standout single—it’s a microcosm of Black Hole Superette’s grand design. Entirely self-produced, the new LP dives into the invisible forces—glowing energy drinks, liminal airport terminals, city blocks patched together like memory—that shape our inner worlds. Aesop enlists a who’s-who of underground and mainstream MCs (Lupe Fiasco, Homeboy Sandman, Open Mike Eagle, billy woods, Elucid), each adding their own gravity to this technically masterful journey.

If Aesop Rock’s career has been a pursuit of the ever-smaller details that comprise the colossal, Black Hole Superette promises to be his most accomplished, immersive experience yet. Buckle up: “Send Help” is just the beginning of a trip through sound and psyche that only Aesop can deliver.
