David Byrne is back and bolder than ever with Who Is the Sky?, his first album since 2018’s American Utopia, set for release September 5 via Matador Records. Produced by Grammy-winner Kid Harpoon and backed by the avant-chamber ensemble Ghost Train Orchestra, this 12-track collection is both theatrical and intimate—equal parts groove and philosophy.

The first single, “Everybody Laughs,” featuring St. Vincent, is a buoyant yet bittersweet anthem that captures Byrne’s uncanny gift for making the existential danceable. Hayley Williams, Tom Skinner, and Mauro Refosco also lend their talents to the record, creating a textured, genre-blurring experience that asks big questions with a wink.

Byrne calls the album “personal” yet universal—exploring love, absurdity, and the everyday strange with orchestral flair and lyrical wit. Tracks like “My Apartment Is My Friend” and “I Met the Buddha at a Downtown Party” fuse quirky storytelling with lush arrangements, showing a softer, more introspective side of the Talking Heads frontman.

To celebrate, Byrne is taking the show on the road. His new world tour kicks off this September with a 13-piece band and mobile stage choreography reminiscent of American Utopia’s Broadway run. The tour will hit North America, Australia, New Zealand, and Europe in early 2026.

With Who Is the Sky?, Byrne once again dances between the avant-garde and the accessible, proving that reinvention isn’t a phase—it’s a way of life.
