🎧 múm Announce New Album ‘History of Silence,’ Share Enchanting Single “Only Songbirds Have a Sweet Tooth”

Beloved Icelandic experimentalists múm return with History of Silence, their first studio album in over a decade, out September 19 via Morr Music. Written, deconstructed, and reassembled over two years across Italy, Reykjavík, Berlin, Athens, and more, the album is a masterclass in sonic exploration—equal parts intimate, intricate, and otherworldly.

🎧 Watch “Only Songbirds Have a Sweet Tooth”

Lead single “Only Songbirds Have a Sweet Tooth” opens the curtain with sun-soaked textures, cassette beats, distorted vocals, and bursts of warped light—literally, as it begins with the sound of a camera flash. “It’s easily the most light-hearted song on the record,” says múm’s Örvar Smárason, setting the stage for a collection that’s airy yet grounded, meandering yet magnetic.

On History of Silence, time drifts, stretches, and dissolves. Songs like “Our Love is Distorting” blend ambient glitches with subtle string arrangements, always resisting the obvious path. From symphonic touches recorded by Sinfonia Nord in northern Iceland to lo-fi field recordings captured in cities around the globe, múm have created a record that quietly defies structure—delicate yet bold, filled with emotion, space, and sonic memory.

After a stunning return at Big Ears Festival, múm embark on a coast-to-coast North American tour this fall in support of the album. Full dates below.
