Far Caspian is back with “Whim,” the final single before the release of his much-anticipated new album, Autofiction (out this Friday via Tiny Library Records). Blending bright textures with introspective lyrics, the track invites listeners to shake off mental fog and reengage with the world.
The project of Irish musician Joel Johnston, Far Caspian is a one-man sonic universe: Johnston wrote, produced, mixed, and played every instrument on Autofiction from his studio in Leeds. Previous singles — “An Outstretched Hand / Rain From Here To Kerry,” “First Day,” and the album’s title track — drew acclaim from Pitchfork, Consequence, and Guitar World, thanks to their shimmering soundscapes and emotional clarity.
Autofiction is a deeply personal pivot. Burned out after his last album, Johnston nearly shelved Far Caspian altogether. But after producing records for other artists (like Green Gardens and Ellur), he reignited his creative spark and returned with fresh eyes—treating his own demos as a producer first, songwriter second. The result? A record that merges Broken Social Scene-style energy with moments of clarity, vulnerability, and joy.
