Philadelphia’s Golden Apples return with “Freeeee,” a swirling, psychedelic earworm and the latest preview from their new album Shooting Star, out September 19 via Lame-O Records. Shimmering with watery textures and jangly lift, the track finds songwriter Russell Edling navigating the highs and lows of creativity, likening the process to “swimming through space” — sometimes suffocating, sometimes blissfully weightless.
Directed by Bob Sweeney and shot on film, the accompanying video mirrors the song’s dreamlike ebb and flow. It’s the kind of track that feels loose and spontaneous but lingers long after it ends — an instant entry into the band’s catalog of “groovers, rockers, rollers, and bangers,” as Edling calls them.
Shooting Star is described by Bandcamp as “mid-century folk rock meets Stereolab and Yo La Tengo,” a bedroom-psychedelia patchwork built from collaborations in varied recording spaces. That DIY charm shines through on “Freeeee,” as it balances Edling’s knack for earworms with the unfiltered honesty of artistic process.
Golden Apples will hit the road with Wicca Phase Springs Eternal next month before launching their own headline tour and returning to Philly for a sold-out show with The Wonder Years at Philly Music Fest.
