Australian indie-rock duo Hockey Dad are back with their rollicking new single “All Hat No Cattle”, the lead cut from their upcoming EP The Clip, out September 12. Known for marrying surf-rock grit with skate-punk energy, childhood best friends Zach Stephenson and Billy Fleming have once again nailed the sweet spot between raw nostalgia and fresh experimentation.
“All Hat No Cattle” takes its name from a phrase overheard at a service station — a cheeky jab at appearances without substance. The track itself is anything but shallow, with sunburnt guitars and propulsive percussion that call back to early favorites like Blend Inn and Brain Candy, while still pushing their sound forward. The accompanying video leans into that playful spirit, cementing Hockey Dad’s knack for channeling humor, honesty, and heart into their music.
The EP The Clip marks a milestone for the duo: their first independent release, a return to DIY roots after years of building an international following. With over 100 million streams and tours alongside Third Eye Blind, Taking Back Sunday, Mt. Joy, and Ultra Q, plus praise from Rolling Stone and The Guardian, Hockey Dad have proven themselves one of Australia’s most formidable exports. This new era feels like both a homecoming and a bold step ahead.
