The Lemonheads Return With Love Chant + New Single “Togetherness Is All I’m After”

It’s been nearly twenty years since The Lemonheads released a full album of original material, and with Love Chant (out October 24 via Fire Records), Evan Dando and company sound both road-worn and newly lit. The latest single, “Togetherness Is All I’m After,” is a perfect snapshot of that duality: a song that begins with a crash and dissolves into a whispered plea.

The guitars are thick but not abrasive, creating a fuzzed-out cushion for Dando’s unmistakable baritone. His voice—older now, shaded with experience—lands like a weary friend still capable of cutting through the noise with clarity. Co-written with John Strohm (Blake Babies), the track recalls the melodic warmth of It’s a Shame About Ray, but filtered through decades of bruises and wisdom.

The album itself, recorded in São Paulo with producer Apollo Nove, is rich with collaborators: J Mascis, Juliana Hatfield, John Felice, Nick Saloman, Erin Rae, Tom Morgan, Adam Green. Each track pivots between scrappy guitar anthems, introspective ballads, and country-psych detours. “Deep End” bristles with Mascis’ unmistakable guitar tone, while “The Key of Victory” floats like a hymn, buoyed by Rae’s spectral harmonies. It’s a sprawling, generous record, one that proves The Lemonheads’ influence on a new generation of songwriters is no accident.

Dando’s memoir Rumors of My Demise (out October 7 via Gallery Books) makes this return even more poignant, pulling back the curtain on the myth and the man. Taken together, the book and the album remind us that The Lemonheads matter because their songs keep finding ways to speak—messy, melodic, unflinching.
