Hatchie Unveils New Single “Only One Laughing” Ahead of Liquorice Release on Nov 7

Australian dream-pop artist Hatchie (Harriette Pilbeam) has shared her shimmering new single “Only One Laughing”, the second taste of her forthcoming record Liquorice, out November 7, 2025 via Secretly Canadian.

Full of glowing guitar textures and soaring melodies, “Only One Laughing” harkens back to the euphoric highs of Hatchie’s earliest work while tapping into a rawer, more unrestrained honesty. The track is paired with a colorful music video filmed at Melbourne’s iconic Luna Park, its carnival visuals amplifying the song’s restless, kaleidoscopic energy.

Hatchie describes the track as a candid rant against loss of control: “I wrote ‘Only One Laughing’ to air my frustrations with the state of the world and the position I found myself in at the time (early 2023). I wanted a rollicking song that felt like you were struggling to keep up with me basically ranting about the lack of control I felt over my life.”

The single follows the glowing lead track “Lose It Again”, which Brooklyn Vegan called “dreamy and wistful,” while Paste proclaimed, “we’re convinced we’re going to get Hatchie’s best album yet.” Together, they hint at a record that’s simultaneously playful and piercing, offering layers of both sweetness and bite.

With Liquorice, Hatchie has tapped deeper into her own voice. Working alongside producer Melina Duterte (Jay Som), drummer Stella Mozgawa (Warpaint, Courtney Barnett), mixer Alex Farrar (Wednesday, MJ Lenderman), and mastering engineer Greg Obis (Slow Pulp, Dutch Interior), the album mirrors the titular candy—sweet, salty, bitter, and twisty all at once. Its songs wrestle with longing, obsession, and the freedom of self-discovery, while marking Hatchie’s most unfiltered statement yet.

After years spent in Los Angeles, Pilbeam and her longtime partner/bandmate Joe Agius returned to Australia, where Hatchie rediscovered grounding in relationships and in simply being. Liquorice reflects that personal shift: a record rooted in confidence, complexity, and the relief of no longer needing to fit into expectations.
