Los Angeles-based Americana artist Gold Star — the moniker of Marlon Rabenreither — returns with his deeply affecting new single and music video, “Happy.” The track premiered this week on SiriusXM’s Outlaw Country Channel, marking a luminous new chapter for one of LA’s most quietly revered songwriters.
Produced by Travis Pavur (Lana Del Rey, Andrew Bird), “Happy” is steeped in wistful melancholy and tender observation. Rabenreither describes the song as both an exploration of happiness and a meditation on its fleeting, almost spectral nature.
“In some ways, the song is about happiness,” he says. “But really it’s about its elusiveness—the kind of mysterious, unachievable happiness you notice in others from afar. Some of it’s about me, some about my friends, but mostly it’s about the universal pursuit of it—and the disconnects it can reveal.”
Visually, the “Happy” music video captures that wistful tension between longing and contentment—an intimate window into the quiet poetry that defines Gold Star’s work.
About Gold Star
Over the past decade, Marlon Rabenreither has built a reputation as one of the most gifted songwriters in Los Angeles’ underground Americana scene. Across acclaimed albums such as Big Blue, Uppers & Downers, and last year’s How To Shoot The Moon, he’s crafted a sound rooted in classic Americana but touched by dreamy melancholy and poetic restraint.
His work has led to collaborations and tours with Mazzy Star, Orville Peck, Lucinda Williams, Phoebe Bridgers, The Black Lips, and Stephen Malkmus, and just this week he wrapped a short run of shows with Brent Cobb.
