LA County’s Dutch Interior—the six-piece collective of Jack Nugent, Conner Reeves, Davis Stewart, Noah Kurtz, and brothers Shane and Hayden Barton—continue their quiet domination of the modern indie landscape with “Play the Song,” their first release since this year’s critically acclaimed Moneyball (Fat Possum).
Where Moneyball earned comparisons to American songwriting greats, with Pitchfork calling it “thoughtfully realized” and Stereogum praising their “bleary, textured form of indie rock,” “Play the Song” captures something both smaller and grander—a single, fleeting moment looped into eternity.
Recorded at Hyde Street Studios in San Francisco, the track drifts like a lucid daydream—melancholy chords, featherweight percussion, and Noah Kurtz’s reflective delivery pulling the listener inward. “I wrote it as sort of an homage to those songs that come around every once in a while and grab you in a very specific but unexplainable way,” Kurtz explains. “You just have to put that shit on repeat until you can’t anymore.”
It’s a sentiment anyone who’s ever fallen in love with a song understands—the strange intimacy of listening as a form of devotion. The accompanying music video mirrors that feeling, blending soft surrealism with the band’s signature off-kilter tenderness.
Following a year of rising acclaim and a stunning full-length, “Play the Song” feels like a sigh of recognition—a reminder of why we hit repeat in the first place.
