DOROTHY – “What’s Coming To Me”

DOROTHY is a hard rock/goth band from LA consisting of vocalist Dorothy Martin, drummer Jason Ganberg, guitarists Devon Pangle and Eli Wulfmeier, and bassist Eliot Lorango. Martin has this great voice that reminds me of Johnette Napolitano with that deep dusky lower range and that kickass high range that brings shivers down your spine.  In an interview with Lauren Schaffner for Loudwire, Martin relates the following:

On January 10, 2021, Martin announced via her Twitter account that her new album would be called “Gifts From The Holy Ghost”. In an interview with Loudwire, she revealed the name of the album came to her following an incident where she claimed to have witnessed her guitar tech die from a heroin overdose and then return to life. “I come out and see him and he’s blue and green, and I knew he was dead at the moment. I just knew it, I don’t know if anyone’s had this experience. I’m pretty sure you know a dead body when you see one. […] I’m just sitting there breathing and holding hands with my sound engineer. I’m like, ‘Whoever’s out there, just send him back. Give him another chance.’ After a few moments of silence, this voice said to me, ‘Okay, we’re sending him back now.’ And then I open my eyes, all the color had returned to his skin. He opened his eyes, and he was alive, and I couldn’t believe it.”

You can hear that brush with death and watching someone come back from the dead in DOROTHY’s song, “What’s Coming To Me.”  With the pounding guitars, and the relentless percussion and drums propelling the song, Martin’s voice is the real standout.  If you have missed Concrete Blonde or Lita Ford at her darkest, check out DOROTHY for a wild ride.  Lyrics provided below:

I could feel it from the start Thick, like fog, It was the warning of a Broken heart Blinded by the lightning and the white-hot power of love Rain and thunder Washing me under And I’m cursin’ the skies above A storm is brewin’ babe I ain’t got time to sit and pray Because this life don’t come free I got what’s mine comin’ to me I said a storm is brewin’ babe I ain’t got time to sit and pray Because this life don’t come free I got what’s mine comin’ to me Sugar, understand what’s in store So you’ll be ready Cus the breakin’ levy Bringin’ water to your door A storm is brewin’ babe I ain’t got time to sit and pray Because this life don’t come free I got what’s mine comin’ to me I said a storm is brewin’ babe I ain’t got time to sit and pray Because this life don’t come free I got what’s mine comin’ to me Love ain’t patient It’s not kind And true love waits To rob you blind I’ve braved this hurricane And I got mine Blowin’ right back to me A storm is brewin’ babe I ain’t got time to sit and pray Because this life don’t come free I got what’s mine comin’ to me I said a storm is brewin’ babe I ain’t got time to sit and pray Because this life don’t come free I got what’s mine comin’ to me
