On their fourth release, Away From The Castle, the New Orleans pair expand their sound with elements of yacht-rock and disco. The track “Just Think” features a vibrant disco rhythm reminiscent of Tame Impala’s take on the Bee Gees’ style. They also embrace a relaxed, lounge-like vibe, with the disco beats adding energy. The guitar work in “Better Than Ever” echoes the textured style of Steve Lacy’s “Bad Habit.” Meanwhile, “Is It Really Over” channels the grand ballad style akin to Simple Minds.
Despite these explorations, Video Age’s signature sound remains intact. The album, with its consistent quality, ensures that each track is engaging enough to keep listeners from skipping to the next song in a playlist. Impressively self-written, produced, and recorded, the duo showcases their talent in crafting polished pop music. However, they opt for a seamless, somewhat undifferentiated flow across the album, rather than giving each track a distinct identity.
