of Montreal has revealed their upcoming studio album, “Lady On The Cusp,” set for release on May 17 by Polyvinyl Record Co. The album’s announcement has garnered attention from notable outlets like Pitchfork, Stereogum, Under The Radar, BrooklynVegan, Consequence, American Songwriter, Northern Transmissions, and Pollstar, among others. This collection marks a dazzling integration of of Montreal’s musical ventures and represents Kevin Barnes’ last project based in Athens, before their move to the culturally vibrant and snowy landscapes of southern Vermont. The album features a significant stylistic shift from the art-rock opener “Yung Hearts Bleed Free” to the folk-tinged “Rude Girl On Rotation,” reflecting Barnes’ new surroundings and societal aspirations.

The newly released “Rude Girl On Rotation” accompanies an official music video. The track explores themes of cultural suppression and yearns for integration into Vermont’s rich forests and progressive atmosphere. Barnes notes that the song draws inspiration from his relocation and features a guitar tuning favored by Nick Drake and a 1960s West Coast rock bass line, reminiscent of Canned Heat’s “Poor Moon.” He aimed for a raw, unpolished sound and is pleased with the swift recording process of the track.

The album “Lady On The Cusp” comprises ten songs that traverse gender and genre boundaries with its complex, delightful, and often poignant tunes. Written during the period of Barnes’ upcoming move with partner and musician Christina Schneider, the album reflects on the past while looking forward to the future, all through Barnes’ distinct pop aesthetic.

Unlike many of his contemporaries who often revisit past glories, Barnes continues to innovate, crafting exuberant and intricate music. This spring, of Montreal will bring their dynamic live performance to cities across the U.S., including New York, Los Angeles, Boston, Philadelphia, Atlanta, and more, introducing new creative sparks with “Lady On The Cusp.”
