NYC’s gauzy indie rockers Closebye unveil the album opener “Lucky Number” from their new release Hammer of My Own, accompanied by a music video. This track shines a spotlight on the unique contributions of the band members, particularly Margaux Bouchegnies of Margaux.
Songwriter Jonah Paul Smith explains, “The initial spark for ‘Lucky Number’ came from an article I read about lottery winners who ended up ruining their lives after hitting the jackpot. The notion of a ‘lucky number’ leading to someone’s downfall struck me as both sad and amusing. As I was reflecting on luck and destruction, I was also mourning the loss of a friendship. The song evolved to encompass all of these themes. Some days, you feel angry and betrayed, while on others, you feel guilty about your own role in the situation. The song tracks this shift in blame, with the chorus changing from ‘take a look at what you destroyed’ to ‘take a look at what I destroyed’ as it progresses.
Much of this album is about rebuilding, and this track, as the opener, finds me surveying the wreckage and trying to make sense of what happened.”
