Philadelphia-based musician and visual artist Jacob Theriot, formerly of indie-rock trio Sports, is back with his latest project, Jaco Jaco, and a brand-new album, Gremlin, set for release on March 21st via [label name]. The album’s lead single, “Woman,” is out now, offering a blend of slick funk, dreamy psych, and a touch of ‘70s AM rock.

A follow-up to 2024’s Splat, Gremlin is a playful yet introspective journey through self-reflection and longing. Though not directly inspired by the Gremlins movie, the album embraces its campy, kitschy vibe to explore themes of irreverence and introspection. “This record came from a confused and lonely place,” Theriot shares. “It’s like an inner dialogue guiding me through life when it feels like it’s working against me.”

“Woman” stands out with its lush basslines, shimmering guitars, and light distortion, weaving a narrative about honesty and acceptance in relationships. “It just kinda happened,” Theriot recalls. “I was jamming to a breakbeat, and the riffs fell into place. I was deep into D’Angelo’s Black Messiah at the time, so maybe some of that influence crept in.”

Originally from Tulsa, Oklahoma, Theriot’s musical journey started in grade school with his brother and a childhood friend, eventually forming the band Sports, which led to three successful albums and international tours. Now, with Gremlin, he channels his years of experience into a project that’s as visually captivating as it is sonically rich—drawing inspiration from ‘90s sitcom Dinosaurs, Les Blank documentaries, and alternative comic books.

With themes of absurdity and sincerity colliding, Gremlin is a vibrant, beautifully crafted album that feels like a mix of personal therapy and playful storytelling. As Theriot puts it, “It’s written in the third person, but really, it’s all me.”
