Review: Flowers For The Dead Find Strength in Softness on Stirring New Single “Perfect View”

@flowersforthedead release their new single “Perfect View,” out now ahead of their First Place EP dropping this Friday, Flowers For The Dead prove that restraint can be just as powerful as noise. The track opens in a hush and swells into a melancholic anthem about searching for love and belonging, touching on themes of isolation within a community. Singer/guitarist Jessie Szegö captures this emotional nuance not only in the music but also in the self-directed video, which features mimes acting out a fractured love story—an oddly fitting metaphor for a band shedding old layers and leaning into vulnerability.

Produced by Justin Pizzoferrato (Dinosaur Jr., Sasami), First Place signals an exciting new chapter. While 2024’s Magnolia leaned into distortion-heavy shoegaze, this four-song follow-up pulls back the curtain to let the songwriting shine. The result is a compact, intimate, and cohesive evolution of the band’s sound, where every lyric lands with clarity and intent.

Formed in 2021 as Szegö’s solo project, Flowers For The Dead has since bloomed into a trio with bassist Ella Buskirk and drummer Ten Bears. Their chemistry is undeniable across the EP, especially on the closer “Thorn,” a hushed standout that strips away effects and proves they don’t need walls of sound to leave a lasting impression.

The band is currently on tour, with a hometown release show this Friday at Comet Ping Pong in D.C. Don’t miss them live.
