Scottish indiepop duo The Cords have dropped their infectious new single “I’m Not Sad”—a bittersweet blend of upbeat hooks and melancholy lyrics—just ahead of their self-titled debut LP, out Sept. 26 on Slumberland / Skep Wax.
“It’s about feeling sad without knowing why, staying in bed all day even though you don’t want to, and pretending you’re fine when people ask,” says vocalist Eva. “Like a lot of our songs, the music is happy, but the lyrics aren’t.”
Sisters Eva and Grace burst onto the scene in 2023, channeling the jangly charm of The Primitives, Dolly Mixture, and Heavenly while breathing fresh life into the C86 sound. They’ve already shared stages with The Vaselines, Shonen Knife, BMX Bandits, The Go! Team, and Camera Obscura, and earned international buzz from their cassette single and Christmas flexi.
Recorded in just six days with Jonny Scott (CHVRCHES), the debut album is a whirlwind of jangly riffs, punk-ish energy, and dreamy slow-burners—proving The Cords aren’t just keeping indiepop alive, they’re pushing it forward.
