Black Moth Super Rainbow – Soft New Magic Dream (Rad Cult, June 6)

Black Moth Super Rainbow, Soft New Magic Dream, new album, Rad Cult, experimental pop, synthpop, Tobacco

Two decades in, Black Moth Super Rainbow return with Soft New Magic Dream, a syrupy, synth-laced trip through nostalgia, romance, and woozy bliss. Out June 6 via Rad Cult, their seventh album is a sugar-dusted dreamscape that leans into slow-motion funk, warped pop, and analog sweetness—all unmistakably BMSR, but more mellow, melodic, and romantically surreal than ever.

Where 2018’s Panic Blooms dabbled in darkness, Soft New Magic Dream floats in technicolor haze. Vocoder-drenched vocals from Tobacco swirl through warped ballads, gummy love songs, and grooved-out neon lullabies. There are moments that slink like slow jams, others that bubble and buzz with fractured breakbeats, and everywhere, the comforting fizz of their freak-pop signature.

This is BMSR in soft-focus—playful, tender, and gently twisted. It’s less a sonic freakout and more a chill float through a synthetic candy sky. Strange, sweet, and slyly seductive, Soft New Magic Dream is a blissful step forward for a band that keeps evolving without ever losing their flavor. Listen to “Open The F*cking Fantasy” below:
