Field Medic—aka Kevin Patrick Sullivan—emerges from a self-imposed “mental retirement” with surrender instead, a raw, self-released new album arriving August 8th. Anchored by the poignant doo-wop-tinged lead single “MELANCHOLY,” the record marks a return to Sullivan’s roots, blending heartbreak, humor, and hard-won clarity.
Written in the wake of sobriety, antidepressants, and deep therapy work, “MELANCHOLY” explores the lingering weight of depression even after healing has begun. Its retro groove contrasts with Sullivan’s candid reflection: not everything is fixable—but you can still sing through the fog.
After years of shapeshifting between acoustic poet, lo-fi rapper, and indie experimenter, surrender instead finds Sullivan in his most honest form yet. The album plays like a decade-long conversation with himself, taking stock of everything lost and learned since his debut Light Is Gone dropped ten years ago.
Set to join Richy Mitch & The Coal Miners on tour this fall—with stops at NYC’s Webster Hall (Oct 18) and LA’s Fonda Theatre (Nov 8)—Field Medic is back, not with a bang, but with a fragile, fearless whisper. This is the sound of an artist making peace with the process.
