New Wave Of Girl Groups: The Ophelias – “The Fog”

“The Fog”

Almost

The jingle-jangle beat of this great band hark back to 60’s girl groups, 80’s New Wave, and late 90’s dreampop while looking far afield.  Having formed the band while still in high school, bassist Grace Weir, guitarist/lyricist Spencer Peppet, percussionist Micaela Adams, and violinist Andrea Gutmann Fuentes first met at a time when each were independently serving as the “token girl” in various dude-bands from their hometown of Cincinnati, OH.  This working with “dudes” helped them realize that an all female band was the best way to bring across their vision, and what a great vision in is.  “Fog” is a great example of their work; poppy, dreamy (as belied by the name), yet lyrically succinct and sweet without being sappy.  This is a great band that is definitely a needed shot in the arm for music right now.  Another album that is on perfect replay on my stereo.
