This is the perfect aging rockstar plea to a groupie to stay the night. In Amanda Palmer’s “Do It With A Rockstar.” Palmer tells the groupie, “Do you want to dance? Do you want to fight? Do you want to get drunk and stay the night? She comes off as desperate saying please please stay. As she says, “Do you wanna know all the things I do, where I’m all alone and thinking about you?”,
while the groupie makes up all types of excuses: the pets are alone, I need to charge my phone, there is chicken on the stove. Throughout the song, Palmer gets desperate and must come off menacing because tshe says wait, I’ll be fine in a minute. By the end of the song, one is never sure whether the groupie stays or the star collapses in an overwraught exhausted mess. The need for companionship is overwhelming. Palmer will do anything, talk politics, make the groupie cry, let him strike her, just to get him to stay.
The music is driven by Palmer’s extraordinary piano playing. It really is nice to hear her with a complete band (not that a complete band has ever been necessary). Comparisons can easily be made to David Bowie’s “Cracked Actor” about the aging actor who tells his trick, “Forget that I’m 50 cuz you just got paid.”
