For the first time in over a decade, Iceland’s beloved experimental collective múm return with History of Silence, their seventh album, due September 19 via Morr Music. Recorded over two years in studios scattered across Reykjavík, Berlin, Athens, Helsinki, New York, and even the 117-year-old Guggenheim House in Kobe, the album continues their reputation for bending the line between electronic and acoustic with stunning intimacy.
Today, they share the single “Kill the Light,” a luminous, slow-burning track that layers sunshine-soaked beats, mangled guitar, and warped bass into something surprisingly playful. Örvar Smárason explains: “It literally begins with a burst of light — the click of a camera flash we sampled — and drifts into a carefree space, the most lighthearted song on the record.”
While the title History of Silence suggests restraint, the album instead brims with bold textures: drifting piano motifs, ghostly feedback, and hushed strings that flicker like half-remembered dreams. múm have always been masters of turning fragility into strength, and here they use silence as a canvas to paint warmth, fragility, and resilience.
Following their triumphant showcase at Big Ears Festival earlier this year, the band will bring History of Silence to life on a full North American tour this fall.
