Madeline Kenney is back — and she’s never sounded more fearless. Her fifth full-length album, Kiss from the Balcony, arrives July 18th via longtime label Carpark Records, marking nearly a decade of shapeshifting artistry that’s included collaborations with Toro y Moi’s Chaz Bear, Jenn Wasner of Wye Oak, and Kurt Wagner of Lambchop.
Her previous LP, A New Reality Mind (2023), earned widespread acclaim for its genre-defying textures and emotional clarity. The New York Times praised her for filling “her canvas with bold and angular shapes,” while Stereogum hailed the record as proof that Kenney “has never sounded more sure of herself or her intentions.”
Following April’s dreamy lead single “All I Need,” Kenney now shares a second preview: “Scoop.” The track further unveils the deeply personal yet universally resonant world of Kiss from the Balcony — an album that grapples with love, power, vulnerability, and the messy beauty of healing.
“I’ve done a lot of healing in the past few years,” Kenney shares. “I trust myself — and the world — a little more every day.”
Through shimmering synths, intimate metaphors, and razor-sharp insight, Kiss from the Balcony becomes a quiet revolution: a feminist meditation on connection and control, steeped in honesty but never without hope.
“Scoop” itself emerged from a swirl of thoughts on modern detachment and the silent expectations placed on women. Originally titled “Guitar Scoop Heart Flip,” the song navigates layered guitar melodies and late-night revelations, anchored by the sacred solidarity of bathroom talks with strangers.
Kenney’s bandmates Ben Sloan and Stephen Patota join her in crafting a lush, three-piece arrangement that blurs the line between solitude and sonic catharsis — each note a soft declaration of selfhood.
She puts it simply: “These aren’t diary entries — they’re meditations on small, strange moments. But they’re mine.”
