Q & A with Diamond Rings
Q: When did you first know that you wanted to be a musician?
A: I didn’t really! I just knew that performing and singing brought me
pleasure and joy so I kept at it. After awhile I started playing more
and more and eventually it became my job!
Q: What artists inspired you to start performing/recording?
A: Mostly my friends who were already making music in Toronto. People
like Katie Stelmanis of Austra, Owen Pallett, and John Caffrey of Kids
On TV.
Q: What process do you go through when you write?
A: I try and try and try until I finally do. Sounds simple, but it’s not!
Q: How did music help you express who you are?
A: Music has given me a means of describing my window onto the world. The
thing I like about music best is that there aren’t many rules and the
ones that do exist are always made to be rewritten.
Q: How do you feel music can help save lives?
A: I don’t know if it can but it can definitely bring joy and comfort to
someone who may otherwise feel alone in the world.
Q: Are you releasing any new music or touring soon?
A: I’ll be touring throughout the summer with Orchestral Manoeveurs In
The Dark (OMD) across Canada and America as well as making appearances
at a few select festivals.
Q: Where do you see music heading in the future?
A: Hopefully the recording and production of music will continue to be
further democratized and made more accessible to a wider range of
people of all ages and backgrounds. I think music is a great way to
connect across cultures and hopefully we’ll see more and more people
pushing boundaries and bridging gaps in the culture.
Q: Any words of advice for other musicians trying to make it or
trying to find their voice?
A: Work as hard as you can but remember that at the end of the day it’s
still supposed to be fun. Slow and steady always wins the race.
