As a therapist, I recognize that the apprehension surrounding new relationships is a universal feeling. Razor Braids encapsulates this sentiment beautifully in their latest track “Berate Me,” a highlight from their much-awaited album Big Wave, scheduled for release on June 7th. Now streaming on various platforms, this single navigates the complex emotions of starting anew with someone, blending sincerity with a raw portrayal of vulnerability.
“Berate Me” showcases Razor Braids’ adeptness at intertwining introspection with a light-hearted, almost satirical take on their insecurities and aspirations for personal growth. This blend renders the track immensely relatable for anyone journeying through the intricacies of love and connection. With its refined indie rock sound, reminiscent of the emotional richness found in the music of Mannequin Pussy, Indigo de Souza, and Rilo Kiley, “Berate Me” transcends mere musical composition to become a healing experience for its audience.
When speaking about the inspiration behind “Berate Me”, Hollye Bynum of Razor Braids says the following:
“Berate Me is about entering a new romantic relationship with someone and the anxiety and baggage you bring along with you. The healing done from past experiences has led you to the realization that you should be treated better than you’ve been. You recognize the patterns not only with past partners, but also within yourself. What is my role in this? What unhealthy behaviors am I exhibiting? It sometimes sucks to be self-aware. There’s this sense of playing it cool and really badass in a new relationship when in fact you’re like shitting your pants. You don’t want to show all your skeletons in the closet.”
